Jackson County seniors surprised with Christmas gifts

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

South Mississippi kids weren't the only ones getting Christmas surprises this year. The Bacot-McCarty Foundation also donated hundreds of dollars to make sure Jackson County senior citizens had gifts under the tree.

An unexpected visit from Santa Claus and load of presents under the tree were just some of  Christmas surprises at Singing River Rehab & Nursing Center for seniors.

The holiday event is part of Singing River rehab's adopt a senior program, which helps make sure everyone has a gift for Christmas. But when some people were left without sponsors this year, the Bacot McCarty Foundation donated more than $700.00 for gifts.

"Through their generous donations, we were able to give above and beyond any Christmas yet," staff member Nicole Etheridge said.

The non-profit foundation's executive director Todd Trenchard said he was more than happy to put a smile on the senior's faces.

"It is something about giving and watching somebody receives something that is totally unexpected. With our senior population, it is a totally unexpected gift because they may not have a loved one  that can visit them because of maybe proximity or one circumstance or the other, so it is truly been a blessing to see this," Trenchard said.

The more than 100 excited seniors couldn't wait to unwrap their presents, and they received everything from new pajamas to perfume.

Vivian Johnson loved her Christmas surprise. She said the holidays bring back such great memories.

"It goes back to my childhood a little bit, sure does," Johnson said.

The center's staff hopes the community will continue to show that very special Christmas spirit.

"Please remember our seniors throughout the year. At Christmas time they come to mind, but they have needs throughout the year," Etheridge said.
