A line of wicked weather turned holiday joy into a battle for survival in Pearl River County.
Pearl River County EMA Director Danny Manley said a dozen homes near the McNeill community were "destroyed" by the line of severe weather that raced through Mississippi. Eight people in those homes had to be transported to an area hospital. According to Pearl River County's emergency management director, their injuries were not life-threatening.
The homes were near White Chapel Road, Joe Smith Road, and Highway 11. There all south of McNeill.
Just east of there, a Stone County fire chief said there was significant storm damage off Highway 26 near Wiggins. A roof was reportedly torn off a home near the Magnolia community. And power lines were down.
First responders rushed to the western end of Stone County to survey the damage.
Both damage spots were associated with a line of severe weather that spawned tornado warnings across much of South Mississippi.
