Weather could be severe today

Posted: Updated:
BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Many South Mississippians woke to thunder, lightning and heavy rain on this Christmas morning.

That rain was associated with a warm front which lifted to our north. We will see some scattered showers through the rest of the morning, but there is still the potential for severe thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening hours, as the cold front approaches.

This powerful cold front will bring us warm and humid conditions today. The heating of the day will help to fuel thunderstorms around midday and this afternoon.

As the front gets closer to South Mississippi, we'll see very gusty winds out of the South between 10-20 mph.

While, the majority of the severe storms look like they will stay to our north, we will still see some strong thunderstorm in our area, some of which could be severe.

This same low pressure system has the potential for tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds, especially to our north. Also, there will be a major snow storm through the Midwest causing many travel headaches.

If you are traveling this holiday season, please drive safely and arrive alive!
