Trucker dies while placing warning triangles in road

PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) -

A trucker was killed early Friday morning as he was putting warning triangles in the road after being rear-ended by another 18-wheeler.

It happened on US 190 near LA 1145 in Port Allen around 1:45 a.m.

The victim was identified as Nathan Tobias Jr., 57, of Plaquemine.

The Louisiana State Police said Tobias had slowed down his 2006 Freightliner tractor-trailer on US 190 East to make a left turn when another Freightliner big rig crashed into him.

Both trucks sustained only minor damage.

Tobias got out of his truck to put orange warning triangles in the road to let drivers know to go around the wreck.

Troopers said as he was placing the triangles, a 2003 Chevrolet truck hit him.

Tobias was taken to Baton Rouge General Mid-City Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

No charges have been filed in the accident.

Investigators said they don't think impairment was a factor in the crash, but per standard procedure in deadly wrecks, samples of blood from Tobias and the driver of the pickup were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for toxicology analysis.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
