OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Ocean Springs resident Marie Wicks is back home visiting her family over the holiday, but soon it is off to Las Vegas where she'll represent Mississippi in the Miss America pageant.

"I feel completely excited and ready," said WIcks, describing her state of mind right now.

She is a 23-year-old former valedictorian from Ocean Springs High. Both her brother and younger sister can also lay claim to the same honor.

With a smile and a chuckle Marie told us, "People will sometimes ask my Mom, what did you feed those kids?"

Marie is an intelligent, charming young woman who represents everything that is good about America's youth today. She is also a young lady with a lot of varied interests. She just graduated from Ole Miss where she majored in French and International Studies. She also plans to study pre-med when she goes back to Ole Miss.

Eventually, Marie plans to be an eye doctor. Her brother, Robert, is in the medical program at Wake Forest right now.

Marie also plays classical piano, which will be her talent at Miss America. As if all that isn't enough to keep her busy, Marie also just finished writing a children's book. All the proceeds go to the Children's Miracle Network, which is the primary sponsor of Miss America.

As Marie gets ready for the pageant, she can't help but think back seven years ago, when she was chosen Jackson County's Junior Miss.

"I have gotten a lot more comfortable with every single part of performing and doing interviews," she said. "I feel like I have come into my own a little bit more."

Those who know Marie describe her as sincere, caring, and genuine. We asked Marie how she would describe herself?

"Oh, I am a dreamer," she said. "I am also a pianist, a believer, and an encourager."

Despite all the hard work that has been required to get ready for what will be the biggest night of her life, Marie says she has loved every moment of it.

The new Miss America will be crowned the night of January 12th in Las Vegas. No matter what happens that night, you can be certain of one thing: Marie Wicks will stay the same charming young lady she has always been.

As part of the pageant, each contestant has a video featuring their respective state at http://www.missamerica.org/videocontest/

Be sure to visit that site and vote for Marie's video. The contestant with the most votes, automatically gets into the top 15 at the Miss America pageant.

You can watch the pageant live on WLOX-ABC. Mark the date on your calendar. It is Saturday, January 12th at 8pm. The venue will be Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

WLOX anchor Jeff Lawson will be there and will be providing updates on our website, as well as our WLOX Facebook page.
