Military father surprises son at school for Christmas

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

First grader Khamory Gipson wanted the typical stuff any seven-year-old boy would ask Santa for: toys, video games and even a car. But there's something the Baton Rouge student wanted more than anything else.

"My dad to come home," he said.

Khamory, his three-year-old brother and his mother all moved from Hawaii to Baton Rouge in the summer of 2012. His father who is in the U.S. Army stayed behind for training. He will be deployed in the summer of 2013 to Afghanistan.

So when Santa showed up at his school, Wedgewood Elementary, on Thursday, he told Santa exactly that. And moments later his dad, 1st Lt. Shamory Gipson, popped out.

Khamory was not quite sure what to do when he first spotted his father. There was a look of shock on his face. Khamory's mother, Kimberly, was in the audience watching with tears streaming down her face.

"This is a long time coming. I've been anxious about doing it. It's been hard for the past six months," she said. She says Khamory and his dad are extremely close. Even dad says its been difficult.

"We Skype every once and a while and he always gets sad because he knows the computer goes and he won't see me. Just to see him and touch him was a blessing," Shamory said.

The Gipson's say this Christmas will be extra special, since Shamory won't be with them next year.

"We're going to play whatever he wants," said Shamory.

When the WLOX First Alert Weather Team issues an Alert Day for South Mississippi, it is because we believe the  weather will impact your day. The current Alert Day is because of the high rainfall totals we have seen with the potential for more rain. In fact, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening.
