Vrazels restaurant calls it quits after a successful run

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

After more than a decade in business, a coast restaurant will be closing its doors for good Saturday night. Vrazel's Restaurant in Gulfport served many of its regulars for the last time this evening.

Through the ups and downs of the economy and the struggles following many natural disasters, William Vrazel has 27 years of a successful business under his belt. It's been a good run, but at this point, Vrazel says its time for change.

"We began with what I thought was the best staff, and we're ending with probably an even better staff than we started with. Its been a wonderful run and I've enjoyed every minute of it. I've got great customers here on the Gulf Coast. People seem to really enjoy the cuisine. I've loved every minute of it, but its time for me to move on," Vrazel said.

Vrazel says with a business, as stressful as the restaurant industry is, maintaining it at an older age can be tiresome. He prides himself on creating a brand of excellence and feels that ending on a high note, is the best way to do it.

"We all felt that we all have families and little kids. The demand of the restaurant is extreme and you can't get away. I think right now its time to accent family, promote family and be more into family. The restaurant business is a little hard to do that, although we work as family. But I think its time we all concentrate on family," Vrazel said.

Throughout the years, the eatery has served as much more than a restaurant. Touching loves, and creating memories for countless families on the coast. Mark Helgesin and his wife Angel are just one of many examples.

"We actually had our first date here at Vrazel's a few years back. We've been coming here probably four to five times a year since then. So it's a big part of our lives," Helgesin said.

Though its a bittersweet moment for many, Vrazel is confident he's making the right decision. He says he started this business venture with his faith in God leading him. Now that he's beginning a new chapter in life, its that same faith that he believes will carry him along.

"God loves us all. We must rely on that faith to get us through times that are hard and times that are great. So lets go forward," Vrazel said.

When the WLOX First Alert Weather Team issues an Alert Day for South Mississippi, it is because we believe the  weather will impact your day. The current Alert Day is because of the high rainfall totals we have seen with the potential for more rain. In fact, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening.
