Back Bay Mission food basket drive gets big boost

Back Bay Mission in Biloxi got a big donation for their food basket Christmas drive. The mission on Division Street, known for helping those in need, reached out to the community for a little help when they needed it. A big delivery Friday is evidence that this a community that truly cares.

Like the Christmas Cavalry, a pickup truck arrived filled with some much needed food for Back Bay Mission's food basket drive.

Volunteer Cathy Wildschuetz who heads up this drive said, "It's been such a success this year, it's really been amazing."

They were running low on food and worried how they would feed so many needy families this year, but local businesses came to their rescue by holding their own food drives for Back Bay.

Wildschuetz said, "Toney Chiropractic is here, they did a food drive for us and they have an entire truckload."

Dr. Chris Toney from Toney's Chiropractic in Ocean Springs says the public was incredibly generous.

"While we were at the office, people would bring the food in. But we also had a bin outside the front door and it was always nice to come in the next morning and see it full of food."

All of this food will help tremendously as Back Bay volunteers fill up Christmas baskets to fill a big void in our community and this truly was a community effort.

Wildschuetz said, "Hard Rock Casino showed up yesterday with a truckload of food, Biloxi Paper Company showed up. There are some big groups, but there are individuals too; families out there that are doing this. I had somebody yesterday tell me they had a 5-year-old and they helped put a basket together, just from their family."

It may just look like food on the surface, but volunteers like Cathy Wildschuetz say it's an important way to spread love to those who need it most right now.

"The homeless, the needy, service families, we've got everyone covered this year."

Back Bay Mission is also giving the homeless a wonderful surprise by giving out 50 back-packs filled with food, clothing, and other necessities.
