JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A homeowner and his dogs scared off a would-be burglar Monday afternoon in west Jackson.

Jack Brenemen says his dogs started barking just before he heard what he says was someone breaking into his kitchen in broad daylight.

Brenemen says around 12 p.m. Monday, he went to the back door of his home and saw a broken window and a young man on his door step. The suspected would-be burglar then told Brenemen his car broke down next door.

When Brenemen went to call police, the young man, in his late teens or early 20's, ran away. It wasn't until later Brenemen discovered an unusual item left near the back door step.

"I went outside to sweep up the glass and everything like that and found a bowl of meat that they left behind," Brenemen said. "The police said [it was] to appease the dogs and so they took the plastic bowl to dust for finger prints."

Brenemen says Jackson police are investigating the incident and no arrest has been made.
