BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
BREC started work Thursday on the first part of its Capital Area Pathways Project, which could soon become an alternate rouge around the city for bicyclists.
The first section, following Wards Creek, will be more than 2 miles, connecting the Mall of Louisiana to Picardy to Siegen Lane.
Eventually, the bike trail will expand to more than seven miles, running around through Essen Lane, Perkins Road Park and all the way around to Perkins Rowe.
"We know that the people of East Baton Rouge want this," said BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight. "They told us they wanted this, so we're happy to bring this to you and the hard work that our staff made to make a difference here."
The Wards Creek Trail will cost around $1 million to build. Officials expect it to be finished by summer.
