CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Cleveland Police officers have started giving statements to investigators about a long chase that ended with two people shot dead.

The first officers to give their statements did so on Tuesday morning to agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. BCI is leading a task force looking into the deadly shooting.

Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams died after cops fired 137 shots at their car after a police chase from Cleveland to East Cleveland.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner tells 19 Action News 30-year-old Williams was shot 24 times.  Russell was hit 23 times.

The dashcam video sound painted a picture of the final moments of the chase. 19 Action News spent hours reviewing some audio clips from the Cleveland Police Department.

The chase went on for more than 20 minutes from downtown to the west side as far as West 85th, south to Clark, down into Steelyard Commons and back up through the roundabout.

Next, it was back onto the Innerbelt and east to 72nd Street. Then south onto Euclid and east into East Cleveland where eventually it ended in a hail of gunfire.

Police say the driver of the vehicle refused to stop, and police pursued the vehicle.

Sources tell 19 Action News a shell casing was found along the path of the chase.

Sunday night, Cleveland officers walked along the high-speed lane of the Shoreway between Dead Man's Curve and East 55th, and they said they'd found a casing.

But no gun was found with the suspects, and it's not clear if the new evidence is connected.

The officers are being questioned after being given their rights as suspects would. A union attorney has been with them.

The union feels confident the officers will be found justified in their actions even though the chase lasted 25 minutes and 13 officers fired 137 shots.
