OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

The victim of an attempted burglary fought back after the alleged suspect tried breaking into the victim's apartment Saturday, according to Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd.

Byrd said, 24-year-old William Hodgkin Miller Jr. of the Reserve Apartments in St. Martin is the man accused of the break-in. Miller reportedly broke into another resident's unit at the same apartment complex.

After receiving a call from the victim, deputies arrived and found Miller lying on the third floor balcony with a single gunshot wound to the left bicep.

The suspect was transported to Ocean Springs Hospital for treatment. His injuries were non-life threatening.

Miller was later released to deputies and transported to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.

He made his initial appearance on Monday before Judge T. Larry Wilson, who set his bail at $5,000.

If convicted, Miller faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Miller was charged with an attempted residential burglary offense.
