Starkville claims the 5A State Football Championship over Pascagoula 28-11

The Pascagoula Panthers championship run came to an end Saturday night in Jackson. The Panthers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 43 yard field goal off the foot of senior Grant Warren. He would kick two other field goals covering 34 and 28 yards in the second half to close out his senior season with 17 field goals.

Starkville quarterback Gabe Myles bagged two1-yard touchdowns runs. He had 43 yards rushing and added 82 yards passing to help lead the 12 & 3 Yellow Jackets past the 11 & 3 Panthers 28-11.

Panthers quarterback Stacey Warren rushed for 97 yards and had 96 yards through the air.

Pascagoula trailed 21 to 3 at the half but tacked on a safety and field goal to trim the Yellow Jackets lead 21-11 in the third quarter.

Starkville was not to be denied after losing to Picayune in the 2011 5A Championship game. Myles, a Mississippi State commitment, guided Starkville to a 4th quarter touchdown to end any hopes of a Pascagoula comeback.

Panthers head coach Lewis Sims did a super job this season leading his team to three straight playoff victories over West Jones, top-ranked Picayune and Pearl River Central. Pascagoula had finished the regular season 3rd in the tough Region 4-5A ranks.
