Stone Co. merchants offer holiday discounts to lure shoppers

WIGGINS, MS (WLOX) -

Some South Mississippi business owners are trying to do more to make this a successful holiday season by working together. Dozens of Stone County merchants participating in a promotion called Christmas Open House are offering special deals Friday and Saturday.

Customers are always a welcome sight at Posh Apparel in Wiggins. The owner said keeping the cash register busy is even more important during the Christmas season.

"The holidays is definitely something that helps pull us through the whole year," said owner Sandra Kirk. "So it's very, very important that we have a good season and get our retail sales up."

Getting sales up is what the Stone County Economic Development Partnership's Christmas Open House is all about. Officials said they invited a variety in the merchants, from clothing stores, to antique shops, to restaurants. They all participate because having more to offer will encourage more people to shop in Stone County.

Stone County Economic Development Partnership Executive Director Jay Paul Gumm said, "Being a relatively small county tucked between two metropolitan statistical areas we have a lot of retail leakage, so it's important to try to keep our dollars here. Keep our economic strength in Stone County and perhaps bring some in from our neighboring counties as well."

All 24 business are offering discounts to lure in customers. They said by working together under a spirit of cooperation they can all do well this holiday season.

Morgan Peters of Jack's Home Improvement said,  "When all of the businesses get together and do a Christmas open house weekend, I think it's more effective than just one business trying to do it on their own. We did collective advertising and really tried to play up shopping locally here this year."

"It is a small community and we all want each other to prosper and to grow and to be successful," said Kirk.

People who spend at least $10 during the open house can enter a drawing for special prizes to be given away December 8th after the Wiggins Christmas parade.

Participants include: Alexander Hardware & Supply, Animal Care Clinic, Blossman Gas, Bodine Pottery, Estes Tire Company, Fantastic Sam's, Goodwill Store, Hair Bows to Tippy Toes, Island Dreams Tanning and Fitness, Jack's Home Improvement, Kloze Klozet, Lane's Jewelry, The Market Place, Mobile Solutions, The Pecan House, Pizza Inn, Posh Apparel, Radio Shack, S&P Farm and Garden, Serendipity Antiques and Deli, Skinner's Florist, Subway, Super Bowl Lanes and Sports Cafe, White House Grits.
