Gulfport man escapes house fire

Posted: Updated:
GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A Gulfport man was able to escape his burning home unharmed Wednesday morning. Gulfport firefighters responded to a house fire on Hancock Avenue around 9:30am.

Firefighters say a man was asleep when he was awakened by a noise. He discovered the house was on fire, so he ran out and called 911.

Firefighters say there was extensive damage to the attic and moderate damage through the rest of the house. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials say it appears to be accidental.

Firefighters want to advise the public to make sure they check to see that their smoke detectors are working properly to avert any tragedies during the winter season.
