WLOX Editorial: The Salvation Army needs your help

Posted: Updated:

The ringing of bells is a sound you'll be hearing all across South Mississippi as you do your holiday shopping. The Red Kettle Campaign is one of the major ways the Salvation Army raises money to help the needy.

Major Terry Ray, head of the local Salvation Army, says last year the Angel Tree Program helped ten thousand children. This year he says the requests are even higher than last year.

No doubt the slowdown in our economy is a major factor for the increase. The Salvation Army needs your help to be able to fulfill the requests for help. The goal this year is to raise 200 thousand dollars between now and Christmas.

Not only will this help buy Christmas gifts for children, but also, provide food and help pay electric bills.  In addition to donations, The Salvation Army also needs volunteers to ring the bells at the red kettles.

If there aren't enough volunteers, then the Salvation Army has to hire people to man the kettles, spending money that could otherwise go toward efforts to help the needy.

Please reach out and help the Salvation Army help our community, it's one of the best gifts you can give this holiday season.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
