How to avoid holiday weight gain

Posted: Updated:

The holiday shopping season is in full swing now and so is the holiday eating season. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, most people put on a few pounds.  And as most of us know, it's so easy to gain weight and so hard to lose it.

But if you want to maintain your weight, or even lose some during the holidays, a trainer at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Biloxi has some tips, along with a special offer to help keep you on track.

It's hard to pass on those holiday homemade favorites, and trainer Scott Logan says you don't have to.

"You may wait all year for that pecan pie, so have it. Satisfy that craving and then move on."

But don't overdo it.  Logan says an important key to a healthy diet and healthy weight is portion control.

"That's the first thing. You want to make sure you're not stuffing your face; enjoy a little of everything," Logan said.  "You don't want to deny yourself. Have enough you can live with and them leave the table after that."

He said it's also important not to skip meals, and that it's a better idea to eat small meals throughout the day; snacks like an apple, yogurt, or a handful of nuts.

"When you eat more often, it keeps your blood sugar more stable instead of spikes and drops. And it makes it easier for your body to lose fat because you body doesn't think it's starving."

He said your body is more likely to store that fat if you skip meals, making it harder to lose.

Regular exercise should also be a part of your routine and the Kroc Center is promoting a healthier holiday with a Holiday Shape Up Special: a six week membership for $10.

"We're trying to help people avoid that holiday weight gain."

The Shape Up program includes periodic weight checks and prizes for those who make the most progress. But you don't have to go to the gym to lose weight and be healthier. Regular exercise can be as simple as walking.  But Logan says you need to make exercise a priority in your life at least a few days a week.

"You don't want to just look good, you want to feel good, so you'll be around for awhile. Take care of your body, so it will take care of you."

Registration for the Shape Up contest at the Kroc Center in Biloxi is November 28th through December 4th, so it will take you right through the holidays.
