Agents take down sites selling bogus goods online

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC (WAFB) -

Law enforcement agents report 132 domain names worldwide illegally selling counterfeit merchandise online were seized Monday.

The operations were called Project Cyber Monday 3 and Project Transatlantic.

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted the investigations in the US. ICE provided information about the arrests through a news release Monday morning.

Law enforcement agencies from Belgium, Denmark, France, Romania and the UK, along with the European Police Office (EUROPOL) investigated cases overseas.

Federal officials said the sites were set up to dupe customers into buying fake goods as the holiday shopping season gets under way.

Investigators also identified PayPal accounts used by those websites. The feds said more than $175,000 was collected through those accounts.

Those PayPal accounts are being targeted for seizure by agents.

Cyber Monday is considered the biggest online shopping day of the year, with many companies offering special deals to those who choose to buy gifts through the web instead of going into stores.
