Auburn University fires football coaching staff after dismal season

Posted: Updated:
AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

Auburn University announced today that it has fired its football coaching staff after a dismal 0-8 SEC season.

"After careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of our football program, I have recommended that Coach Chizik not be retained," said Auburn Director of Athletics Jay Jacobs.  "President Gogue has accepted my recommendation.  Earlier this morning, I informed Gene that he will not return as head coach."

Chizik and the university's entire coaching staff have been dismissed. Assistant coaches for the program will be given the opportunity to re-apply to work under the new head coach when that person is named.

Shortly after today's announcement, Coach Chizik issued a statement saying that he was extremely disappointed in the way this season turned out (read full statement here).

"I apologize to the Auburn family and our team for what they have had to endure," said Chizik. "In my 27 years of coaching, I have gained an understanding of the high expectations in this profession. When expectations are not met, I understand changes must be made."

In a release issued by the university (read full statement here) Jacobs said a search committee has already been named to put together recommendations for the new head coach. Making up that committee is Pat Sullivan, current head coach at Samford University and former All-American for Auburn University and Heisman Trophy winner, Bo Jackson, former baseball and football player from Auburn and Heisman Trophy winner and Mac Crawford, former Auburn football player and business and turn-around expert.

Auburn added that the total contract buyout for Chizik and his nine full-time assistants is $11.09 Million.

Jay Jacobs addressed a letter (read full letter here) this afternoon to all season ticket holders calling this season  "simply unacceptable."

"While I am disappointed that Coach Chizik's career here has come to an end we will long cherish the memories of our first National Championship in 53 years," wrote Jacobs. "Gene and his staff will always be a part of the Auburn Family, and we wish them and their families the best."
