Gulfport murder victim identified, suspect still on the run

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove confirmed 30-year-old Clifton Harper is the man who was killed after a shooting at his home in Gulfport Tuesday night. Gulfport police said the murder suspect is still on the run.

Gulfport Police Chief Alan Weatherford said around 9:30 p.m., patrolmen were called to Harper's home at the 3000 block of 51st Avenue and Malibu Street in Gulfport. They found  Harper with a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest, and no signs of a shooter.

After being shot, Harper reportedly went to a next door neighbors home for help. He was taken to Memorial hospital, where he later died at 10:45 p.m. the same night.

Witnesses said they saw someone flee the scene, but police have no suspects.

Chief Weatherford said two young boys were inside the home at the time of the shooting. One of the boys is Harper's son, the other was not.

"I'm mad, disgusted," the chief said. "You've got two small children that were inside this residence. To see something like this happen to a person, is unacceptable. There's people in this community that know what has happened, or has heard what has happened. We need those persons to step forward and help solve this."

The two boys are now with family members.

Anyone with any information regarding this case is asked to call Gulfport Police at 228-868-5959.
