GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Gulfport police are now investigating a homicide after the victim in Tuesday night's shooting died.  Police Chief Alan Weatherford tells WLOX News the man died shortly after being taken to the hospital. No word on his identity.

Chief Weatherford said the shooting happened around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at a home on 51st Avenue, just north of 28th Street.  He also said two children were in the home when it happened.

"I'm mad, disgusted," said Weatherford. "You've got two small children that were inside this residence. To see something like this happen to a person, is unacceptable. There's people in this community that know what has happened, or has heard what has happened.  We need those persons to step forward and help solve this."

Witnesses said they saw a man running from the scene, but police have no suspects at this time.

Chief Weatherford is urging anyone with information to talk to someone that can help solve this crime.

"There's local community leaders. There are your pastors, your churches, in the neighborhoods that they can go to, and talk to and come forward with the information.  Our children deserve better than this."
