Relief from South Mississippians headed to New Jersey

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) -

Belmar is a small town resting on the New Jersey shore. The city was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and the gracious people, who call the place home were there for Pass Christian in their time of need and now it is time to repay the favor.

Pass Christian Mayor Chipper McDermott said, "We could never give enough back as what everybody gave to us so we are hoping this will be at least a little start. I'm really proud of the town because the town responded just like we hoped they would and knew they would."

Canned goods, sheets, cleaning supplies, tools and money have been collected, Pass Christian resident and New Jersey Native Tricia Taylor and her husband will deliver the relief this week.

Taylor said, "They came down, as I said before, with a rescue truck and so we are in touch with the Belmar Fire Department and the first aid squad up there. We are going to meet with them hopefully on Wednesday, we will be there and get over to them and distribute all the goods we have."

But this will not be the end Taylor said her next trip will be to Lavallette, New Jersey, another town ravaged by Sandy whose residents also reached out to Pass Christian in 2005.

"Three weeks since they have been able to get to their homes down the shore," Taylor said.

Gas leaks have caused a dangerous situation and residents have only been allowed limited access to their homes and officials said this could be like this for several months.

"We are going to go to Lavallette, we are going to take care of the people," Taylor said. "It's a town of 1,800 and I think Pass Christian and South Mississippi can help them."

Taylor asks you to keep them in mind next time you head to the store, "If you pick up a mop, pick up two, we'll take it."

Mayor McDermott said, "We are glad to give back, whatever we can give is not enough, but still we are going to ongoing and keep going like everybody else is doing."

If you have something you want to donate you can drop it off at the Pass Christian Fire Department.
