JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -
A Jackson County sheriff's deputy has been indicted on a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from the July shooting incident at the Jackson County Narcotics Force office.
Deputy Jackie Trussell is accused of simple assault of another task force member who was injured when a gun was discharged inside the office. The incident was not reported until September. At that time, Sheriff Mike Byrd characterized the incident as an accident and told WLOX News proper action was taken.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation looked into the shooting and handed its findings over to the Jackson County Grand Jury. The Grand Jury indictment was made public Friday.
Byrd told WLOX News Trussell has "been relieved of duty pending the resolution of the case." Byrd said Trussell posted a $1,000 bond.
The incident led to discontent among the members of the Narcotic Tasks Force and several police chiefs in Jackson County. The city's of Moss Point, Pascagoula and Gautier have withdrawn from the county-wide task force.
