WEDNESDAY, April 23, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The deaths of well-known people offer an opportunity to educate the general public about disease detection and prevention, a new study suggests. Researchers surveyed 1,400 American men and women after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer in 2011 and learned that more than one-third of them sought information about his cause of death or information about cancer in general soon after his death was reported. TUESDAY, April 22, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Less than 10 percent of crimes committed by mentally ill people are directly linked to the symptoms of their disorders, a new study shows. "When we hear about crimes committed by people with mental illness, they tend to be big headline-making crimes, so they get stuck in people's heads," said study author Jillian Peterson, a psychology professor at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minn. PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

Quick and convenient access to health care has taken a step forward in Jackson County with the opening of a new clinic on Highway 90 in Pascagoula.

The Singing River Health System clinic has been open for only a week, but patients are already finding their way inside. The new twist for this clinic is the no appointment necessary policy. You don't feel well, you just walk in.

But traditional doctors that use a traditional appointment system are still on staff, and have decades of medical knowledge behind them.  Dr. Teresa Williamson works at the clinic.

"Our senior partner has over 35 years of experience here and the two other partners have been here over 20 years and we've added a fourth partner recently," Williamson explained. "We're all local. Most of the community knows us."

The increase in walk in clinics is growing across the country. There's a very simple reason for that. Number one, it's convenient and number two, you can actually be seen for the most part in just a couple of hours.

Tara Johnson is a physician's assistant.

"With the shortage of physicians of primary care, you call your doctor and you can't get in so this is a clinic where you can be seen right away, the same day and get treatment that you deserve," Johnson said.

That treatment covers just about everything that might ail you. If your condition is more serious, there's good news on that front.

"The thing that really makes sense is right next door is Singing River Medical Park with the ancillary services, radiology, labs and that sort of thing," said Richard Lucas with Singing River Health System. "So just a driveway away, the patients that come here can go for the other services they might need medically."

The Singing River Health System Clinic currently has about 25 people on staff and is open from 8am until 7pm Monday through Friday and from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.
