MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -
It was a grand celebration in Jackson County Saturday. Our nation's heroes were honored with a veterans parade.
Folks lined the streets waving American Flags as a parade of proud veterans rolled along Downtown Moss Point. The 12th Annual Veteran's Day parade featured local marching bands, patriotic floats and a moving tribute to all the fallen soldiers.
"This is how the country should do it," veteran Jim Johnson said.
Veterans Jim Johnson and Butch Brown also took to the streets on motorcycles with American Legion Riders from Pascagoula. They said the parade made them feel appreciated.
"For me it carries a particular real joy because when I came back during the 60's in the service, we didn't get that reception, and now we do," Brown said.
Much of the support today also came from young people.
"It made me full of joy because they fight for our country," a one child said.
"I just liked the band, the motorcycle and the candy too, everything," another young parade goer said.
"I think it is especially good. I see young people out there because they understand there are veterans in this country," said Johnson.
Many who came out to the parade said looking at the brave servicemen and women pass helped remind them freedom is not free.
"These are the ones out there protecting us and serving our country," a Moss Point resident said.
"I wish it would be like it was years ago when the streets were flooded with people showing their love for our country in support of them. So, as many of us that can come out we should be here every year," Ocean Springs resident April Baughman said.
After the parade, the veterans were honored with a special program at the Jackson County Memorial Monument.
