JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Eight Mississippi veterans have been inducted into the G.V. Sonny Montgomery V.A. Medical Center's Wall of Honor.

A large crowd gathered for the Veterans Day Ceremony induction Friday morning.

The Wall of Honor is a tribute to the state's men and women who have served our country.

Jack Lucas, Medgar Evers, James Perkins, James Steinwinder, Andrew Tobias, Arie Washington, Sr., Charles Evers, and Dr. John Peoples, Jr. are this year's inductees. Three were in attendance.

Some of the recipients were given the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, or the Bronze Star for their acts of heroism while serving in the military.

Many see the wall as an opportunity to encourage others.

"It gives young people role models to look up to and hopefully aspire to be in that way. In the same way of giving back to their country to their community," said Myrlie Evers. She is the widow of World War II veteran and Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers.

There are two categories required to be a member of the wall of honor, exemplary heroism while serving on active duty and service to the community after military service.
