Nebraska and Southern Miss agreed to play a three game series last year and the 2012 game was played in Lincoln. The 2013 game was scheduled to be played in Hattiesburg but officials from both universities are expected to sign a contract moving the September 7 game to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
Before the Southern Miss football season kicked off it was announced that the Golden Eagles athletic department was in financial trouble, in the hole for one-million dollars.
If the Nebraska game is moved to Arrowhead Stadium, reportedly Southern Miss would receive a check for two-million dollars. The Golden Eagles would be the home team. That would be a huge bonus.
Alumni, fans and students are not happy with the direction of the Southern Miss football program under head coach Ellis Johnson. Some influential alumni would like Southern Miss officials to use some of that two-million dollars to payoff the remaining contract of Johnson and move in another direction.
After nine games, Southern Miss is still searching for win number one. The Golden Eagles had a crowd of about 10,000 this past Saturday in Hattiesburg against UAB. Southern Miss travels to SMU this Saturday.
Southern Miss football coach Ellis Johnson announced Wednesday that senior running back Desmond Johnson and sophomore quarterback Arsenio Favor have been suspended for this weeks game at SMU for violations of team rules.
