Salvation Army re-opens Gulfport store

Officials with the Salvation Army have spent years helping those in need. After Hurricane Katrina, the organization focused on Disaster Recovery. Now that the community is back to a sense of normalcy, the work begins to re-establish services once offered before the storm.

One of those services includes the Salvation Army Family Store. After spending a long period of time searching for the right location, they thought they found the right spot. But owner of 'Let's Do Furniture' Kevin Ruttley had another building in mind.

"The owner said, 'I have a better piece of property and it happens to be my furniture store,'" said Public Relations Director Meghan Webster." And he brought her right next door and said, 'Why don't you use this piece of property?'"

Not only did Ruttley offer his building, but his advice after spending years in the thrift industry.

"Just knowing how tough it is to operate a thrift store and the challenges that are in front of her, I thought if they wanted to do this that I would go ahead and lease this to them. Also, I have a lot of things I can help them with the experience and the background I have in the Thrift Store Business." said Ruttley.

All of the items sold in the new family store are donated from the community. The proceeds will help to fund the cost to run the organization that continues to give back.
