Wienermobile helps CARA and wiener dogs find new homes

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The world famous Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is helping local wiener dogs find new homes.

The giant hot dog made its final stop in the metro area Sunday at Hollywood Feed on County Line Road in Ridgeland.

The Wienermobile reached out to CARA to hold a pet adoption rally featuring dachshunds.

Community Animal Rescue and Adoption has more than 300 dogs and 125 cats at the Jackson shelter.

Families came out to see the traveling hotdog and take pictures with the iconic figure.

The orange and yellow rolling hot dog is 27 feet long and 11 feet high.

Pet lovers also learned more about the animals currently up for adoption at the no kill shelter.

"What would be cooler than the Wienermobile with wiener dogs, hot dogs for sale? The Wienermobile really does bring people in. It makes everyone so happy. We have tons of dogs here today. What's more fun than that and a great way to educate people on adopting animals," said Wienermobile Hot Dogger Holly Nelson.

"We've got a lot of other breeds at the shelter. Somebody can come out and adopt an animal. It's a $100.00 adoption fee. You can adopt animal with that. It's an adoption process they go through, and then they can have a new family member for the holidays," said CARA Board Chairman Jack Welch.

CARA is also preparing for the spring opening of Bree's Dog Park.

The new dog park will be located beside their Flag Chapel Road location.

Wienermobile representatives said the corporation is gearing up for the next class of Hot Doggers.

Hot Doggers are hired to drive one of six Wienermobile that travel the country for one year.

About 1,500 college seniors apply for the positions annually.

When the WLOX First Alert Weather Team issues an Alert Day for South Mississippi, it is because we believe the  weather will impact your day. The current Alert Day is because of the high rainfall totals we have seen with the potential for more rain. In fact, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening.
