GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

On Sunday, members of Rescue Mission Baptist church gathered to honor their pastor, Reverend Curtis Durr.

Reverend Durr founded the church 45 years ago. Now, he's 84-years-old and still pastors full time.

"He really is a symbol of hope and I really admire him physically and mentally," said member Ywanta McLaurin.

"He's just always reached out to me. He drew me in by being kind," said assistant pastor Cecil Coleman.

As Reverend Durr sat alongside his wife Corene, he savored the ceremony dedicated to his many years of service and said one thing has made it possible.

"The Lord," said Reverend Durr.

He said it's a simple mission, but it hasn't always been easy.

"You have your good days and some days harder than others. But it hasn't discouraged me," said Reverend Durr.

"We've just been going up to the kings highway the best we know how and letting him lead us," said Corene Durr.

It's a journey he said he'll continue to lead until he can't anymore.

It's that determination that has a congregation singing his praises.

"We just really appreciate and love him," said McLaurin

"Stay strong and keep preaching the word," said Coleman.
