Several busy Pass Road intersections getting major makeovers

Posted: Updated:
BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

If you drive along Pass Road in west Biloxi, you've probably noticed traffic congestion and construction going on at several busy intersections. The city is making some major improvements at those locations to make them safer for drivers and pedestrians.

On average, more than 28,000 cars zip through Pass Road near Stennis Drive in Biloxi every day. That is the kind of traffic Danielle Gibbs and her three-year-old daughter have to dodge every time they cross Pass Road.

"You have to wait for all the traffic to go away in order to cross to get over here to catch the bus and it's really hard to do," said Gibbs. "We've had a couple of problems going into the apartments where we've almost got hit where people were speeding up and down the streets."

To make it safer for pedestrians, the City of Biloxi is installing a traffic light at Stennis Drive.

"We've got apartment complexes nearby that are generating a good bit of foot traffic. The other thing this is going to do is help slow down traffic right here at the Donal Snyder Center, because we have 22,000 people a year that come to the Snyder Center," said Biloxi Spokesman Vincent Creel.

Two other busy intersections on Pass Road are also part of this $1 million makeover.  At Eisenhower Drive and at Big Lake Road, traffic signals hanging from wires are being replaced with sturdier Cantilever lights and posts.

"What we're looking to do is minimize that damage from future storms," said Creel.

Crews are also putting in handicap-accessible sidewalks, installing pedestrian-activated signals, and widening the intersections by adding turn lanes. For neighbors like Danielle Gibbs, these improvements can't come soon enough.

"When is it supposed to happen? I'm ready for it," she said.

The work at Stennis Drive and Big Lake Road should wrap-up in January. The city is hoping the Eisenhower Drive intersection will be finished by Thanksgiving, in time for holiday traffic near Edgewater Mall.
