Coast Guard rescues crew of HMS Bounty

Posted: Updated:

The Coast Guard says it has found one of the missing crew members of a tall ship that went down off the North Carolina coast, but she is unresponsive.

Lt. Mike Patterson said crews are taking 42-year-old Claudene Christian to the hospital. The Coast Guard is still searching for the captain of the HMS Bounty.

The Coast Guard rescued 14 people from life rafts in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 90 miles southeast of Hatteras N.C., earlier Monday.

The Coast Guard received a distress call from the ship Sunday night. They located the sinking ship about 8 Monday morning.

"While we were holstering them out of the water, their life raft flipped over while there were still four people remaining in it" said Coast Guard pilot Lt. Commander Steve Bonn. "I saw a 30 foot wave literally break over the top of the raft once our swimmer was in there initially, so they were getting a very good ride down there."

Mississippi native, Brian Bailey was apart of the Coast Guard rescue team. He is from Lucedale, Mississippi and a helicopter pilot. Bailey is the son in law of Ridgeland mayor, Gene McGee.

The HMS Bounty is a replica tall ship that's been featured in several Hollywood films.  The crew was headed to St. Petersburg, Florida from Connecticut.

The captain of the ship was still missing Monday night.
