WEDNESDAY, April 23, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The deaths of well-known people offer an opportunity to educate the general public about disease detection and prevention, a new study suggests. Researchers surveyed 1,400 American men and women after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer in 2011 and learned that more than one-third of them sought information about his cause of death or information about cancer in general soon after his death was reported. Mental illness not a driving force behind crime

TUESDAY, April 22, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Less than 10 percent of crimes committed by mentally ill people are directly linked to the symptoms of their disorders, a new study shows. "When we hear about crimes committed by people with mental illness, they tend to be big headline-making crimes, so they get stuck in people's heads," said study author Jillian Peterson, a psychology professor at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minn. DIAMONDHEAD, MS (WLOX) -

A new health clinic opened its doors in Diamondhead. The ribbon was cut Wednesday at Memorial Physician Clinic and Diagnostic Center.

"We said, you know what, if you can't come to us, we are going to come to you," Dr. Lee Voulters said.

Neurologist Doctor Lee Voulters is one of the many doctors that will be spending time in the brand new 15,000 square foot facility.

"A lot of our patients from this area would have to come to Gulfport to see us. Really, it was difficult for them to get there and they just don't like leaving the community," said Voulters.

So, Memorial brought the clinic to them, offering a number of different services, including neurology, orthopedics and urology.

Memorial Hospital CEO Gary Marchand said patients will receive top notch care using state of the art technology.

"We have a walk in physician clinic for primary care which is for bee stings, flu, colds, ear aches. We can do full diagnostic work ups here," Marchand said.

Cat scanning for major body images can be performed within a matter of seconds, and Voulters said patients won't have to travel for minor X-rays.

"We're great believers in community health based medicine or community health hospital," Voulters said. "Obviously for very sick patients, acute care has to be done in the hospital. But for outpatient services and providing services we want to come to the community, we want to make it as easy as possible and have easy access. It's all about physician patient relationships and we want to make it as easy as possible and easy access to healthcare people want."

Memorial's Physician Clinic and Diagnostic Center is located off of Leisure Time Drive in Diamondhead and is open six days a week.
