BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The man charged with false pretense after pretending to be the father of a child who died also faces a charge of uttering forgery, according to Biloxi police Lt. Bobby Darden.

Darden said 27-year-old Matthew Ernest Ladnier IV of Gulfport posted an ad on Craigslist seeking a nanny in June. A woman responded to the ad and he hired her, agreeing to pay her $1,000 up front for her expenses, Darden said.

The nanny job took a turn when the victim deposited his checks at a Biloxi bank. After a few days, those checks were found to be forgeries. Darden said the bank held the victim accountable. When she contacted Ladnier about the issue, he reportedly told her he would take care of it.

After media reports of Ladnier, the victim called police and reported the suspect's forged checks.

Judge Strong issued a warrant and set Ladnier's bond at $50,000.

The false pretense charge he received October 12 is a misdemeanor and stems after Ladnier allegedly pretended to be the father of a child who died in an accident and attempted to collect money for that child's funeral.

He is currently being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center.
