Cruisers head east to Ocean Springs for a trip back in time

Posted: Updated:

Want to see a poodle skirt twirl. No problem. How about some 1950s drive in food. No problem there either.

Classic cars and those that watch them numbered in the hundreds on the streets of downtown.

For Tracy and Christine Carroll, cruisin'' is a very special time.

"Well, we came here last year for our honeymoon, we had just been married and we decided that we would make it a tradition and come back for each of our anniversaries and put in the window first anniversary and I'm also going to be changing the number on my shirt every year," Christine said.

Not everyone is from out of town. Some locals like to check out the cars. Locals like Richard Reed of Long Beach.

"I've got two 1970 Corvettes that I've restored. They are all original," Reed said.

So what does he look for under those hoods?

"Just to see what kind of carburetion they have. What kind of air conditioning they have," Reed explained.

You can't have cruisin'' without the sound of an OOOGAA horn. You also can't have it without people like Mike Stanley.

"This is my fifth year and I told the wife just a while ago that as long as somebody can push me in a wheelchair I'll be here," Stanley said.

When any of our out of town visitors come to cruisin'' events on the coast, they come for various reasons. Of course, the classic cars top the list. But here in Ocean Springs, there's another reason that's also near the top of the list--the friendliness.

Don Crowe is visiting from Georgia.

"We have really good friendships we've developed here over the years and everybody is extremely nice," Crowe said. "So it's a fun place to come. We wouldn't miss it."

One thing is certain, when it comes to cruisin'', people don't miss a beat.

The street party continues Friday and Saturday with events both days beginning at 11 a.m.
