Accident claims life of pregnant Brandon woman

BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Brandon police are investigating a Monday accident that claimed the life of a pregnant woman.

At 8:41 p.m., the Brandon Police Department received a call about a vehicle accident on MS Highway 18 between Marquette Road and Sunset Drive. Emergency personnel were on scene at approximately 8:44 p.m. 

A preliminary investigation indicates that a 2003 Lexus was traveling east on Highway 18, which collided with a 1999 Ford van traveling west.

The driver of the Lexus was identified as 30-year-old Matt Davis, of Brandon.  He sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. 

The driver of the Ford van was identified as 26-year-old Leslie Byrd, of Brandon.  Byrd, who was also six-months pregnant, was transported to a local hospital where she later died. 

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
