(RNN) - Imagine your pilot boyfriend takes you on a flight over Chicago's skyline. You're happy, he's happy and the winter sky is absolutely beautiful.

All of a sudden your breath is taken away when the small plane you're flying in is in trouble. Your boyfriend asks you to remain calm but he needs you to read an emergency checklist for a "ring engagement procedure."

On a perfect February day, Ryan Thompson took his girlfriend, Carlie Kennedy, on a breathtaking flight. But what she didn't know was that he was about to propose to her in a bizarre way - and it's all on camera.

The music and the captions on the video describe their conversation.

At the beginning of the flight, the Chicago couple appear happy and the day couldn't get any better. But that didn't last long as the plane starts to shake and Kennedy's mood changes.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Kennedy said, "All of a sudden I felt my stomach kind of go up in my throat and I realized we were heading straight for the water," she said. "And then he [Thompson] said, 'Honey, I need you to stay calm. The flight controls aren't working.'"

Thompson reaches in his pocket for the ring as Kennedy reads what she believes is the "emergency checklist."

"I genuinely did believe that we were going to die," she told GMA. "I felt like our lives depended on me making it through that checklist."

When Kennedy read the question, "Will you marry me?" she seemed confused at first but soon burst out laughing and covered her face.

Thompson then pulled out a ring and asked Kennedy "Will you marry me?" and she accepted.

Most women probably would've refused and given Thompson a piece of their mind as soon as they were back on the ground, but Kennedy told GMA they are a perfect match.
