Southern Miss celebrates two anniversaries

Posted: Updated:
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

October 4 marks the anniversary of two musical influences at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Next week, the Director of the Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Jay Dean, will celebrate 25 years with the symphony as it begins its 93rd season. Dean has lead the orchestra to an international reputation.

According to Dean, this season will being with famed violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Dean says it is important to bring international artists, like Sonnenberg, to the campus because the symphony is not just for the university.

Dean says during his 25 years, he has watched his students grow into professional performers and bring high quality music to the area.

"Provide the students of the university and the people this community, and this state with the highest possible quality musical performances that we can, and change the lives of people. Whether they are playing on the stage, or sitting in the audience, to give them those experiences that really are meaningful, and they  really will remember for the rest of their life,"said Dean.

Limited tickets remain to the Symphony Silver Season Opening Night, which is October fourth at 7:30 in Bennett Auditorium on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg Campus. Tickets are $20, $30 or $40.
