Sports Safety Officials train for large venue evacuations at USM

Posted: Updated:

Sports venues aren't taking recent nation-wide bomb threats lightly, and the University of Southern Miss is making sure they are prepared for the worst.

The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security has brought in 18 sports security trainers this week. It's for a workshop called "Train the Trainers."

It's an effort to improve the preparedness of large venues to evacuate patrons in a timely and safe manner. By providing these management officials with the proper knowledge and procedures, it's the hope they can go back, and train their own staff.

"Well, the key is to train people on how to learn the curriculum, know the curriculum, and know how to deliver the curriculum in an effective fashion so that they are able to go out and train other folks in sports or other event management," explained Mark Bodenschatz, Associate Athletic Director at Penn State. "The key is to establish a good methodology for how to develop that evacuation plan and then to carry it out."

The workshop not only focused on evacuating venues for bomb threats, but also for severe weather situations.
