JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -
One person is dead following a one vehicle accident on I-10 Monday
around 2:30 p.m., according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop K
spokesperson Johnny Poulos.
The driver was in an SUV pulling a
trailer on the eastbound lane of I-10 near the 56 mile marker just west
of the Gautier city limits, Poulos said.
After losing control of
the SUV, the victim ran off the left side of the roadway and over
corrected a turn. That's when the SUV came back across both lanes of the
interstate and collided with the guard rail causing the SUV to
rollover, Poulos said.
Poulos said, the driver was the only
person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene. The victim's
identification won't be released until family members are notified.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident and no other injuries were reported.
Poulos said traffic was backed up for about eight to 10 miles on I-10 and is clearing up.
Due
to an increased amount of drivers taking to the median to escape
traffic, Poulos reminds drivers, crossing the median is illegal and
hazardous.
"You would not believe how many vehicles we had
turning at the median. Keep in mind that when we have a person that gets
stuck in the median, you pull law enforcement from the wreck to get the
person out of the median," Poulos said.
Poulos said at least
two vehicles got stuck in the median after the wreck. Authorities
stopped a total of 25 people, who were reportedly attempting to cross
the median.
