Some Jackson County supervisors don't want to see people carrying guns in parks and other public areas despite a new gun law in the state. As WLOX has reported, starting July 1st Mississippians will be able to openly carry a gun and other weapons with or without a permit.   Some Jackson county leaders want to create a local ordinance to keep weapons in check.
GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A Gulfport church is expanding its homeless outreach. Saturday, New Birth Holy Ministries held a clothing giveaway outside of Feed My Sheep soup kitchen.

WLOX caught up with church members as they sorted more than 800 items including shoes, underwear, socks and more for both men and women.

The pastor said the congregation decided to give out clothes after seeing there are a lot of people in the area who live in the woods.

"I watched them walk up and down the road over there by the church. I've seen them stumble. I've seen their shoes. When they come by the church, we give them bags of food. Sometimes we give them a little change," Shepard Gayle Carter with New Birth Holy Ministries said. "We pray for them when they come. Some actually come to the sanctuary. I watch what they've got on, and some of the things they've got on have been on for a long time."

New Birth Holy Ministries is planning to serve a meal to the homeless on Thanksgiving.

The pastor says the church will hold a yard sale on Saturday, October 6, to raise money for that event.
