JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The head of the Narcotics Task Force of Jackson County has temporarily given up command while authorities investigate an incident that has been described as an "accidental shooting", according to Moss Point Police Chief and NTFJC board member Keith Davis.
Sergeant Jackie Trussell was asked to temporarily step down while the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations looks into the incident.
Sheriff Mike Byrd said in a statement that a member of the task force accidentally discharged a weapon in the Pascagoula Office in July.
Byrd said a bullet hit the floor and a piece of tile dislodged and scraped an officer's leg.
Sheriff Byrd says Trussell is still working as part of the Task Force, but Ocean Springs Police Officer Derek Hoppner is handling the day-to-day command duties.
