HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Southern Miss is celebrating not only 100 years of athletics, but also a century of pre-football parties. Saturday, thousands of Southern Miss fans gathered on campus for tailgating at the first home game of the 2012 season.

Fans enjoyed lots of food and other activities prior to the game between the Golden Eagles and the East Carolina Pirates.

"I love getting out here with all our friends, all of our family," said USM student Jessica Hemby. "It brings us all closer together and we get to celebrate for Southern Miss," she said.

"(I like) hanging out with friends, getting some good food and hanging out with other alumni and getting ready to go to the game and support our Golden Eagles," said USM alumnus Fred Jones.

Unfortunately for those dedicated fans, Southern Miss lost in their contest with East Carolina by a score of 24-14.
