PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

Washington Avenue will be closed for longer than expected after a major sewer cave-in Thursday afternoon, just west of Martin Street. Officials said the cave-in was due to pressure resulting from flood waters.

Workers dug an even larger hole to repair the sewer main, and expected the job to only take a day or two. But because of problems with excessive ground water, they've had to install a well point pump system. That pump is going to have to run all weekend to remove the ground water.

The sewer main has a bypass pump installed so sewer service shouldn't be interrupted during the repairs.

Washington Avenue will remain closed at the site with a detour on Wiggins Circle.
