Water release continues from Miss. dam

MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi officials were bringing in more pumps as efforts continued to release water from a lake swollen with rain from Isaac behind a dam about 15 miles north of Louisiana.

Dusty Myers, dam safety engineer for the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, says workers are nearing completion on a drainage ditch about one-eighth of a mile west of 1 slide to direct the water to open fields.

Myers said workers would install a liner for the ditch by late Saturday with the expectation that water could be released sometime Sunday or Monday. The ditch will be 500 to 600 feet long, 200 feet wide and 30 feet deep.

Tangipahoa's earthen dam - a 2,300-foot levee on which a two-lane roadway runs - has not been breached.
