PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) -

Just hours after GMA anchor and Mississippi native Robin Roberts said goodbye to Good Morning America, Roberts' mother passed away.

Lucimarian Tolliver Roberts was 88.

WLOX is being told Robin made it home to Mississippi just in time to say goodbye.

ABC's Diane Sawyer called Lucimarian a beam of light.  She sparkled when talking about family and faith.  But, her star was just as bright when she ventured out to help the community.  Lucimarian was the first African American to head the state's Board of Education.  She also served on the Mississippi Coast Coliseum Commission.

Lucimarian and Lawrence Roberts moved 27 times during the colonel's time in the Air Force.  They chose to settle in Pass Christian.  And they instantly became fixtures in community projects.  Lucimarian's philanthropic work was respected by everyone along the coast.  That was evident when Mrs. Roberts won the prestigious Pat Santucci Spirit of the Coast award.

At home, the Roberts' raised four children, a son and three daughters.  Robin Roberts talked about her mom with WLOX News during an April interview.

"She always made a house a home," Robin said, just before the duo participated in a book signing ceremony.  "She always opened her doors to everyone.  And all I had to do is watch mamma and I tried to emulate her the best I could."

She was also passionate about music and the written word.  Earlier this year, she authored a book, titled "My Story, My Song".  That book explained how family, faith, and song helped her survive the tough times, and truly enjoy the good times.

"Go with God," Lucimarian often told her children.  "I think children have to have that sense of God because parents aren't always going to be with them.  God is always there.  So when my children left for college, I told them about the two L's and two P's of God.  The light of God surrounds me.  The life of God enfolds me.  The power of God protects me.  And the presence of God watches over me.  Where I am, God is.  So, when I am not there, they know there is someone else."
