(RNN) – New Jersey's delegates gave Mitt Romney the push over the top to become the Republican nominee for president.

Fittingly, it was the state of Tuesday night's keynote speaker, Gov. Chris Christie, that solidified Romney's nomination. Christie has been a big supporter of Romney throughout the primary that was long and hotly contested.

The crowd took a break from the roll call to cheer the nomination.

To become the nominee, Romney needed 1,144 delegates, but it wasn't easy. Some states split their delegate vote while others, such as Nevada and Iowa, cast most of their delegates for Sen. Ron Paul.

Even Romney's home state of Michigan cast four votes out of 30 possible for Paul. However, in a touching moment, Romney's brother, Scott, read the vote count as he fought back tears.

Paul supporters could be heard protesting in the background, yelling out Paul's name after the count of the delegates from each state was officially read into the record.

Many Paul supporters are upset that he does not get to speak at the convention, as well as new rules passed by the committee that would make it difficult for outside candidates to win delegates.

All other former Republican candidates now support Romney except for Paul.

Romney will accept the nomination during his speech on Thursday night.

The convention also nominated Rep. Paul Ryan as the Republican vice presidential candidate.
