Bay High Tigers held off St. Martin thanks to defense and ground game

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - Bay High head coach Jeff Hopgood watched his Tigers use a solid defensive effort in taking down St. Martin 17 to 7.

Hopgood said, "The kids held them to under 30 yards rushing on the night. Anytime you can do that you have a chance to win the ball game."

Hopgood says his linebackers played a key role in helping take the sting out of the Yellow Jackets offense on Friday.

"Our outside linebackers did well, Antwan James and Robert Lamb,"Hopgood stated.  He added, "Kendall Island and Coty Mitchell also played well.  Mitchell is probably our best linebacker.  And Barone Lewis Junior moved in from Alabama and really stepped in there and did a great job for us."

Defensive end Phalen Booker also made his presence known on Friday.

Offensively quarterback Donovan Davis runs the Bay High Wing-T attack... an offense that uses the run to set up the pass.

Running back Justus Williams led the Tigers with 115 yards rushing and a touchdown on Friday.  He's coming off an explosive 2011 season when he rushed for over 13-hundred yards with 15 touchdowns.

He said, "The running game is good.  We've got good linemen who work hard. They go down to their practice stations and do what they've got to do to get the job done."

Fullback Kendall Island moved from pulling guard to the offensive backfield this season and responded with 82 yards rushing.

Island, "It's a lot different.  I guess week by week I'll get better. I had a decent game."

Wingback D-quan Lewis added 40 yards rushing thanks to an offensive line led by center Travis Brogle.
