MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

From the houses to the trees and the downtown strip, Moss Point has a rich history that dates back to 1872.

"The oldest home I can document is the Dime House, which is the original parsonage for the Methodist Church," said Harry McDonald with the Historic Preservation Commission. "There are many more that were built after 1872 and before 1905."

McDonald said many of the old homes were funded by factories and given to employees.

"We had a brick factory. We had a glass factory, shoe factory and a foundry all right here, within a 150 feet. The town was almost self sufficient from day one," McDonald said.

Moss Point's preservation committee has worked for several years to gather information and make sure the history of the city remains alive. The addition of this historic district to the National Registry of Historic Places is the payoff of that hard work.

"It's a proud day for the city of Moss Point," Mayor Aneice Liddell said. "We are just glad to be recognized in a positive way and this is just one step in Moss Point moving forward."

Mayor Liddell believes the new distinction will attract history buffs from all over the world.

"We are hoping people will see Moss Point as a landmark to come in, not only to view the riverfront that we have and the natural resources, but also some of the historical buildings that we have," Liddell said.

"We have bragging rights," McDonald said. "No other city along the coast has this distinction."

Moss Point is now working to get signs to place in front of the historical sites.
