Reese wins gold in Olympic women's long jump finals

Posted: Updated:

On Wednesday, Gulfport native Brittney Reese, 25, jumped 7.12 meters during the women's long jump final round winning her the Olympic gold.

Despite scratching four times in six attempts, she was able to make the longest jump in her second attempt.

On Tuesday, Reese scratched twice in the qualifying round before jumping 6.57 meters giving her a place in the final round. She was one of 12 women athletes to make it to the final round.

"It was ugly, but I made it through!!! Talked with my coach and we will be ready tomorrow," Reese tweeted yesterday.  You can follow her on Twitter @DaLJBeast.

Reese is expected to arrive home in Gulfport this Saturday. Her plane is scheduled to land at 6:30 p.m. at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport. The public is invited to attend carrying signs and flags welcoming her home.

Former Gulfport High School Track and Field Coach Prince Jones will be a guest on our 4 O'Clock Show Wednesday. Jones is credited with sparking Reese's interest in the long jump.
